Interior Race Theory

Jacquelyn Iyamah created Interior Race Theory in 2022. Interior Race Theory states that how we design our interior environments can cause Black, brown, and other racialized people to have positive or negative racialized experiences. While the theory initially centered on the home and objects, Iyamah has since expanded it to include interior spaces such as workplaces, schools, restaurants, hotels, and retail— as well as the decorative, atmospheric, spatial, material, structural, and infrastructural elements that make up these interior spaces.
